Merry Calderoni

Presently I paint about surfaces ---living surfaces, ancient walls, structures, or artifacts. Surface is first-it is the most immediate and indispensable part of painting, not read, but rather felt. The feelings it arounses are instantaneous. Before the viewer recognizes the image, he has already been seduced by the surface; it's texture, it's crustiness, it's roughness or it's smoothness. Layers upon layers of paint and materials cause the varied textures-marble dust, metal filings, sawdust, sand, eraser crumbs, glass crystals- combined with pigments, oils and acrylics ask the viewer to feel the surface.?
